Photographs Ease Pain

One of my new favorite photography blogs is PDN Pulse. Not only does it keep us up to date with the every changing pace and news in the creative industries, but also tends to draw in many other interesting factoids as well. As a portrait photographer, I've always enjoyed learning about studies on how photographs impact our private lives.

Ever notice how many people say, "I hate photographs of myself... or I hate being photographed... or, I always come out bad in photographs." Well fact is that this low level of voiced self esteem about one's true appearance partly comes from not having been photographed enough. Those that are photographed often are far more comfortable in their own skin than those that avoid the camera. Being photographed and seeing yourself over and over helps build self esteem about your appearance. Think of the long lasting impact this has the ability to offer children. I've read studies over the years as well stating that having photographs in your home of your family provides children with a stronger sense of the family unit or a belonging. This unconscious reminder of what is important should certainly be a staple in every home regardless of what your interior designer says... A home is about family!

However, a new study I read about over at PDN Pulse also suggests that photographs even help ease pain. And in some cases ease pain even more than holding the hand of your partner or significant other. Check it out...
