We just wrapped up a short film called Trees and Ink, which is now entering post production. The film is a classic tale of money, betrayel, and life written by Khaled Quazz who is also the lead actor. Maring teamed up with Director Ethan Black again along with producer T.J. Collins of the New York Film Group to bring this film to life. Co-creating the scenes with DP Steven Glassner, we lit scenes with a wide variety of tools ranging from Profoto's incredible light shaping tools to DIY concepts that we had to think up on the fly. Filmed entirely on Canon DSLR's like the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 1D Mark IV, we were able to work in all sorts of non-conventional ways on set. Check out a few screen grabs above captured from the footage. Trees & Ink will debut later in 2012 in multiple film festivals.

Lighting for Digital Filmmaking

I teamed up with Director Ethan Black and other cast and crew to produce some indie film shorts that will debut after the first of the year. This first of many films to come, "How to Break Up with Your Girlfriend", was shot in Brooklyn. It's been interesting to use my skills from a different perspective. Most of my career has been lighting to make sure my clients look their best. So, I am having fun lighting from the perspectives of mood and scene rather than just beauty and romance and playing the role of Director of Photography. Here's a few screen grabs from the video footage from our most recent independant film project. This was all captured on the Canon 5D Mark II. Now that digital cameras have qualities that directly compete with film, and are being accepted for television and hollywood productions, it's exciting to be pushing forward as a digital filmmaker. All of these scenes are lit with Profoto's newest Pro Air Daylight HMI and Pro Air Tunstens complimented by standard room lighting and paper lanterns as fill.

Congratulations to Helen and Michael! The Maring Visuals team was honored to share such a special day with this fun loving couple. We started at their homes, followed by a soulful Greek Orthodox Ceremony at the Church, made a stop along the way to Central Park, and then partied late into the night at Cipriani 42nd Street.

We are thrilled to be working with Katelyn and Bob for their upcoming wedding. We photographed both of their senior portraits quite a few years back, and are honored that they returned to us for their wedding. We set out to Hammonaset Beach State Park on the Ct. Shoreline just before sunset. They brought their beautiful Bull Mastiff along as well to join in the fun. This is the second of a 4 part engagement session that we call "The Four Seasons". Just like the title, we will pick a different location each season, and at the end, we will be designing a gorgeous giclée guest book with some of the best photographs from each.

Coincidentally, the Profoto Videos just launched, which you will see in the next post below, and we happen to be out on the beach using the new D1 Air System this week. It's amazing what you can do with one high quality single light setup in the mobile environment with the Profoto BatPac. We shot a little behind the scenes clips on during this session, so you'll see the lights in action once again.

Well, here we are gearing up in the Northeast for Hurricane Irene this weekend. Irene is a few days away, and it reminded me of a wedding we photographed in the Hamptons a couple of years back when the edge of another Hurricane came through eastern Long Island on the day we were photographing Erica and Rob's wedding. The wind was crazy, the waves were huge, and the rain was barraling down. They were closing the streets, and I have to say there was a little nervous tension at night knowing that would could start seeing flood waters. The great news is that it all worked out. Check out this slideshow. We managed to get a few minutes on the beach with our couple, and the warm air added a warm romance to the day. So, we color graded the photographs warm to match to feeling of the day. I have to say, hurricane weddings, make for some tremendous photographs! Enjoy...
